Autism Maps -- Washington

Between 2000 and 2010 Washington had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Washington had a decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses. In Washington the SLD decrease occurred from 2000 through 2008, at which point SLD diagnoses stabilized. While these two trends were occurring, other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation, Speech/Language Disorder, and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses remained relatively steady; Mental Retardation diagnoses experienced a small decrease, Speech/Language Disorder experienced a small increase, and Emotional Disturbance had a very small decrease.

From 2000 to 2010 the Washington population increased from 5,894,121 to 6,724,540. The population from age 3 through 21 increased from 1,609,123 to 1,691,842. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased from 118,851 to 127,978. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased from 1,684 to 8,598; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 50,771 to 44,772; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 6,597 to 4,614; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased from 18,491 to 20,844; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses declined slightly, decreasing from 4,915 to 4,704; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 12,558 to 16,288 and "Other" diagnoses increased from 17,958 to 22,804.
