Autism Maps -- South Dakota


Between 2000 and 2010 South Dakota had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, South Dakota had a significant decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the decade. Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation diagnoses experienced a very small decrease; Emotional Disturbance, Speech/Language disorder, Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses all increased.

From 2000 to 2010 the South Dakota population increased from 754,844 to 814,180. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased slightly from 220,237 to 214,715. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased from 16,825 to 18,026. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 262 to 757; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) experienced a significant decrease from 7,479 to 6,214; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined slightly from 1,474 to 1,432; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased from 791 to 1,099; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased from 4,138 to 4,499; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 1,089 to 1,298; and "Other" diagnoses tripled from 586 to 1,779.
