Autism Maps -- Oregon
Between 2000 and 2010 Oregon had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Oregon had a decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses at the same time that Autism diagnoses were increasing. While these two trends were occurring, other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism, Mental Retardation, Speech/Language Disorder, and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses remained relatively flat throughout the decade.
From 2000 to 2010 the Oregon population increased from 3,421,399 to 3,831,074. The population from age 3 through 21 increased from 904,892 to 933,815. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased from 75,204 to 81,050. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased from 2,945 to 8,338; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 34,351 to 27,293; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined slightly from 4,437 to 3,975; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased slightly from 19,072 to 21,850; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses barely changed, decreasing from 4,695 to 4,679; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased slightly from 1,975 to 2,107 and "Other" diagnoses increased substantially from 4,975 to 10,188.

The animated map above shows the change in the number of diagnosed ASD and Specific Learning Disability (SLD) cases from 2000 through 2010. The points reflect the increase/decrease in diagnoses statewide, but are not indicative of where in the state they occurred.
