Autism Maps -- Oklahoma

Between 2000 and 2010 Oklahoma had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states was the decline in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the time that ASD was increasing. In Oklahoma however, the decline in Mental Retardation (MR) diagnoses was much greater on a percentage basis than the SLD decrease; between 2000 and 2010 MR diagnoses in Alabama declined from 8,480 to 5,569. Among other diagnoses that sometimes overlap with Autism -- Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased slightly; and Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses both had large increases.

From 2000 to 2010 the Oklahoma population increased from 3,450,654 to 3,751,351. The population from age 3 through 21 increased slightly from 964,405 to 993,757. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased from 85,577 to 97,250. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 675 to 3,062; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 44,640 to 40,685; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 8,480 to 5,569; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased from 14,786 to 11,892; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased slightly from 4,173 to 4,497; Developmental Delay diagnoses had a very large increase from 5,779 to 16,074; and "Other" diagnoses also experienced a very large increase from 3,465 to 11,478.
