Autism Maps -- New York


Between 2000 and 2010 New York had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, New York had a significant decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the decade. Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation and Emotional Disturbance both decreased; Speech/Language Disorder, Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses all increased.

From 2000 to 2010 the New York population increased slightly from 18,976,457 to 19,378,102. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased from 4,988,484 to 4,778,922. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 decreased from 491,642 to 442,019. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 7,131 to 32,190; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) experienced a large decrease from 259,450 to 179,498; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 16,291 to 12,234; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 44,681 to 32,537; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 70,368 to 98,511; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 34,492 to 41,817; and "Other" diagnoses more than doubled from 26,755 to 60,097.
