Autism Maps -- Mississippi
Between 2000 and 2010 Mississippi had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, there was a significant decline in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the time that ASD was increasing. In Mississippi, the decline in Mental Retardation (MR) diagnoses was also significant. Among other diagnoses that sometimes overlap with Autism -- Speech/Language Disorder, Emotional Disturbance and Developmental Delay diagnoses all increased, and "Other" diagnoses had a very large increase.
From 2000 to 2010 the Mississippi population increased from 2,844,658 to 2,967,297. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased from 842,288 to 813,511. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased slightly from 62,281 to 64,038. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 419 to 2,356; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased significantly from 27,318 to 16,932; Mental Retardation diagnoses also experienced a large decline from 5,800 to 3,806; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased from 21,076 to 22,851; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses had a significant increase from 684 to 2,638; Developmental Delay diagnoses also increased significantly from 3,724 to 6,117; and "Other" diagnoses experienced a very large increase from 0 to 6,678.

The animated map above shows the change in the number of diagnosed ASD and Mental Retardation (MR) cases from 2000 through 2010. The points reflect the increase/decrease in diagnoses statewide, but are not indicative of where in the state they occurred.
