Autism Maps -- Missouri
Between 2000 and 2010 Missouri had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Missouri had a very significant decrease (almost 50% in Missouri) in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the same time that ASD diagnoses were increasing. Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses declined, Speech/Language Disorder and Developmental Delay diagnoses increased and "Other" diagnoses increased substantially.
From 2000 to 2010 the Missouri population increased from 5,595,211 to 5,988,927. The population from age 3 through 21 increased slightly from 1,530,294 to 1,539,468. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 decreased from 137,381 to 127,164. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 1,723 to 7,297; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) had a very significant decrease from 66,071 to 34,610; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 12,562 to 10,383; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses declined from 9,229 to 6,738; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased from 28,469 to 35,114; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 8,036 to 9,705; and "Other" diagnoses more than doubled from 7,617 to 18,882.
