Autism Maps -- Minnesota
In 2010, Minnesota had the highest autism rate in the US -- and as in all states except Iowa there was a dramatic increase in both the number of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnoses, as well as the autism rate in 2010 compared to 2000. As in many other states, Minnesota also experienced a decline in the number of Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses as ASD diagnoses were increasing.
The contrast between Minnesota and the bordering state of Iowa is remarkable. Minnesota is not quite 2X as large as Iowa in population, but has an autism rate over 10X higher (2010 MN ASD rate of 10.7 -- IA ASD rate of 1). Meanwhile, Iowa with a much smaller overall population has a much larger population of individuals diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability (2010 IA SLD diagnoses 41,386 -- MN 30,543).
From 2000 to 2010 the Minnesota population increased from 4,919,479 to 5,303,925. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased slightly from 1,378,925 to 1,363,450. The total for All Disabilites for ages 3 through 21 increased from 109,880 to 122,850. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 2,793 to 14,531 while Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 38,851 to 30,543. Mental Retardation diagnoses decreased from 10,237 to 8,563; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased slightly from 20,525 to 21,085; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 17,653 to 15,765; and Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 7,502 to 10,193.
