Autism Maps -- Michigan
Between 2000 and 2010 Michigan had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Michigan had a decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the decade (in Michigan SLD diagnoses peaked in 2003, then declined significantly by 2010). Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses experienced a small increase; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased; and "Other" diagnoses had a very large increase.
From 2000 to 2010 the Michigan population decreased slightly from 9,938,444 to 9,883,640. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased from 2,759,796 to 2,585,735. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 decreased slightly from 221,456 to 218,957. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 4,706 to 14,855; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 94,678 to 77,707; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 24,990 to 20,421; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 19,254 to 13,873; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased from 53,087 to 55,594; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 2,622 to 5,858; and "Other" diagnoses increased dramatically from 0 to 20,277.
