Autism Maps -- Maine


Between 2000 and 2010 Maine had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Maine had a significant decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the decade. Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance, Speech/Language Disorder and Developmental Delay diagnoses all decreased; "Other" diagnoses experienced a significant increase.

From 2000 to 2010 the Maine population increased from 1,274,923 to 1,328,361. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased from 324,167 to 304,337. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 decreased from 35,633 to 32,261. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 594 to 2,646; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) experienced a large decrease from 13,143 to 9,332; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 1,063 to 722; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 3,834 to 2,560; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased from 9,734 to 7,076; Developmental Delay diagnoses decreased from 1,167 to 745; and "Other" diagnoses more than doubled from 2,650 to 5,819.
