Autism Maps -- Maryland

Between 2000 and 2010 Maryland had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Maryland had a significant decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the same time that ASD diagnoses were increasing. Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation, Speech/Language Disorder, and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses all decreased. Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses both increased substantially.

From 2000 to 2010 the Maryland population increased from 5,296,486 to 5,773,552. The population from age 3 through 21 increased slightly from 1,412,934 to 1,457,544. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 decreased from 112,077 to 103,490. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a large increase from 2,304 to 8,829; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) had a significant decrease from 44,379 to 32,569; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 6,895 to 5,302; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses experienced a large decrease from 30,382 to 20,006; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 9,145 to 7,591; Developmental Delay diagnoses had a large increase from 1,879 to 7,907; and "Other" diagnoses doubled from 7,732 to 15,880.
