Autism Maps -- Indiana

Between 2000 and 2010 Indiana had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. As in most other states, Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses decreased while ASD diagnoses rose. More dramatic in Indiana though, was the decline in Mental Retardation (MR) diagnoses. Between 2000 and 2010 MR diagnoses declined from 23,301 to 17,738. Among other diagnoses that sometimes overlap with Autism -- Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased slightly; and both Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses increased substantially.

From 2000 to 2010 the Indiana population increased from 6,080,485 to 6,483,802. The population from age 3 through 21 increased slightly from 1,695,113 to 1,742,687. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased from 156,320 to 166,073. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 3,077 to 11,751; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 59,597 to 54,064. Mental Retardation diagnoses experienced a significant decline from 23,301 to 17,738; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased from 47,156 to 43,291; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased slightly from 12,186 to 13,472; Developmental Delay diagnoses increased significantly from 551 to 4,125; and "Other" diagnoses also increased significantly from 3,950 to 14,004.
