Autism Maps -- Illinois

Between 2000 and 2010 Illinois had dramatic growth in both autism diagnoses and the autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Illinois also had a decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses, but SLD as well as many other disability diagnoses increased or remained stable until the middle of the decade before declining. For example, there were 135,022 SLD diagnoses in 2000, 142,295 in 2004 and 117,003 in 2010. The total for All Disabilities, Mental Retardation, Speech/Language Disorder, and Emotional Disturbance also had a pattern of either increasing or at least remaining flat through the middle of the decade and the decreasing rather strongly at the end of the decade. In addition to Autism, Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses both showed continuous and substantial increases during the decade.

From 2000 to 2010 the Illinois population increased from 12,419,293 to 12,830,632. The population from age 3 through 21 decreased slightly from 3,431,891 to 3,353,220. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased slightly from 297,316 to 303,092. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 4,330 to 16,467; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 135,022 to 117,003; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 28,607 to 20,711; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased from 73,842 to 64,489; and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 30,585 to 22,271. In Illinois, Developmental Delay diagnoses increased from 6,123 to 25,090 and "Other" diagnoses also increased substantially from 9,776 to 27,058.
