Autism Maps -- Hawaii
Between 2000 and 2010 Hawaii had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also, as in most states, Hawaii experienced a decline in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the same period that ASD's were rising. Even more pronounced in Hawaii however, was the precipitous decline in Mental Retardation (MR) diagnoses. Between 2000 and 2010 MR diagnoses in Hawaii declined by over half, from 2,723 to 1,196. Among other diagnoses that sometimes overlap with Autism -- Emotional Disturbance and Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses both experienced a large decline, and Developmental Delay and "Other" Diagnoses both experienced large increases.
From 2000 to 2010 the Hawaii population increased from 1,211,537 to 1,360,301. The population from age 3 through 21 increased slightly from 314,811 to 322,423. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 decreased from 23,951 to 19,716. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 364 to 1,298; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 10,752 to 8,490; Mental Retardation diagnoses experienced a large decline from 2,723 to 1,196; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses also experienced a large decrease, going from 3,442 to 1,251; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses had a large decline as well, from 2,519 to 712; Developmental Delay diagnoses experienced a large increase from 1,643 to 2,914; and "Other" diagnoses also had a large increase, going from 1,426 to 2,721.
