Autism Maps -- Florida

In Florida, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnoses increased dramatically between 2000 and 2010, as they did in every state except Iowa. Also, as in most other states, Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses decreased between 2000 to 2010. In Florida however, the Mental Retardation (MR) decline was much greater on a percentage basis than the SLD decline. Among other disability diagnoses that sometimes overlap with Autism -- Emotional Disturbance diagnoses also experienced a substantial decline, Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses increased and both Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses experienced large increases.

From 2000 to 2010 the Florida population increased from 15,982,378 to 18,801,310. The population from age 3 through 21 increased from 3,869,071 to 4,381,807 and total Disabilites for ages 3 through 21 increased slightly from 367,335 to 368,808. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a very large increase from 4,473 to 19,532; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 165,014 to 150,068; Mental Retardation diagnoses decreased significantly from 40,795 to 28,750; and Emotional Disturbance diagnoses also had a large decrease, going from 37,473 to 23,737. Experiencing increases in diagnoses were Speech/Language Disorder which increased from 91,575 to 95,119; Developmental Delay, which experienced a large increase from 9,134 to 16,932; and "Other", which also had a very large increase, rising from 8,693 to 25,389.
