Autism Maps -- Delaware

Between 2000 and 2010 Delaware had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states was the decline in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the time that ASD was increasing. In Delaware however, the decline in Mental Retardation (MR) diagnoses was more pronounced than the SLD decline -- between 2000 and 2010 MR diagnoses in Delaware declined by nearly 25%, from 2,157 to 1,646. Among other diagnoses that sometimes overlap with Autism -- Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased very slightly; Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses both experienced very large increases.

From 2000 to 2010 the Delaware population increased from 783,600 to 897,934. The population from age 3 through 21 increased from 209,981 to 228,062. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 increased from 16,760 to 18,608. During that time period, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses increased dramatically from 325 to 982; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) decreased from 9,509 to 8,792; Mental Retardation diagnoses experienced a significant decline from 2,157 to 1,646; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased from 2,191 to 1,880; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses increased slightly from 688 to 709; Developmental Delay diagnoses had a very large increase from 287 to 1,634; and "Other" diagnoses also experienced a very large increase from 0 to 2,181.
