Autism Maps -- Alaska

Between 2000 and 2010 Alaska had dramatic growth in both Autism diagnoses and the Autism ratio in the 3 through 21 age group. This is similar to all other US states except Iowa. Also similar to many other states, Alaska had a significant decrease in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) diagnoses during the decade. Among other conditions that sometimes have an overlap with Autism -- Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance and Speech/Language disorder diagnoses all decreased; Developmental Delay and "Other" diagnoses both increased.

From 2000 to 2010 the Alaska population increased from 626,932 to 710,231. The population from age 3 through 21 had a minimal increase from 196,154 to 196,314. The total for All Disabilites from ages 3 through 21 had a small increase from 17,691 to 18,048. During that decade, Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnoses experienced a nearly 4X increase from 222 to 828; Specific Learning Disability Diagnoses (SLD) experienced a large decrease from 9,205 to 7,445; Mental Retardation diagnoses declined from 821 to 630; Emotional Disturbance diagnoses decreased from 844 to 681; Speech/Language Disorder diagnoses decreased from 4,014 to 3,258; Developmental Delay diagnoses almost doubled, going from 1,150 to 2,199; and "Other" diagnoses also experienced a very large increase, going from 952 to 2,172.
